Harold Camping and the supply-siders

Harold Camping predicted the Rapture 1n 1994. He was wrong. He predicted it for 5/21/11. He was wrong. He is now predicting it for 10/21/11. Do you think he is right this time?

Ronald Reagan predicted that tax cuts for the rich would ‘trickle down”. He was wrong. George W. Bush predicted tax cuts for the rich would ‘trickle down. He was wrong. Paul Ryan predicts that tax cuts for the rich will ‘trickle down’. Do you think it will work this time?

Earmarks

Peter King (R-NY) wants to give $17 million to the ‘International Fund for Ireland’. Good news, I am assuming that if we can spread this kind of largesse abroad, the budget crisis is over.

Ensuring banks keep more of your money

In 2010 Congress enacted the ‘Dodd-Frank’ law to regulate the financial industry, It established the – and here I will use John Boehner’s (House speaker) own words – it established the “so-called Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB)” which is a “New Job-Crushing Bureaucracy”. Randy Neugebauer (R-TX) said of CFPB “I don’t like them”. On May 13th the House Financial Services Committee voted to limit the power of CFPB.

Why this loathing of CFPB? Do you really have to ask? A member of the committee, Patrick McHenry (R-NC) provides a clue on his campaign web page. To bring jobs to his district he plans to “capitalize on western North Carolina’s strong ties to banking”

The only jobs that count for these Republican obstructionists are banking positions.

Humans behaving badly

‘Anonymous’, a hacking group, threatened to block access to the US Chamber of Commerce’s website. If you tried to access the site on 5/24/11 @10:30 EST it was unavailable. (I had wanted to see if the quote attributed to them – “populations can acclimatize to warmer climates via a range of behavioral, physiological, and technological adaptations.” – was accurate.)

People who believe that ‘climate change’ is not man made, will presumably believe that the US Chamber’s web site crash is an act of God, because they don’t believe people’s actions affect anything.

Why Republicans should thank the Liberal rich

Delaware, Connecticut, Minnesota, New Jersey, New York – all Democrat states – are the top 5 in Federal income taxes paid per resident. West Virginia, Mississippi, New Mexico, South Carolina, Montana, – four Republican and one toss-up – are the bottom 5. Republican states take more from the Federal trough than they put in. Democrats give more.

Republicans should be careful what they wish for. Lower federal expenditures and lower taxes, will benefit Democratic states.
