PRESIDENT OBAMA COMES OUT FOR GAY MARRIAGE

Recent polls show that the majority of Americans now support gay marriage. The president has just announced that he now supports gay marriage. Coincidence?

Chris Barron, conservative gay activist at GOProud, pithily pointed out: “It is good to see that after intense political pressure that President Obama has finally come around to the Dick Cheney position on marriage equality”. (Cheney supports gay marriage, although one has to wonder if he would, if he didn’t have a gay daughter).

Just in case you were wondering, Mitt Romney is still against gay marriage - in fact he is against civil unions. He is even to the right of George W Bush. But in a concession he did say that gay partners could have hospital visitation rights. Well, it’s a start.

NORTH CAROLINA BANS GAY MARRIAGE

North Carolina joined 30 other states in adding a prohibition on gay marriage to its state constitution. A typical reaction of supporters of the measure was expressed by Tami Fitzgerald, Chairwoman of Marriage NC: “We are not anti-gay, we are pro-marriage. And the point—the whole point—is simply that you don’t rewrite the nature of God’s design for marriage based on the demands of a group of adults”.

The problem with Fitzgerald’s analysis is that the Bible never addresses gay marriage, although it is OK with polygamy. Lamech, David, Solomon, Abraham and Jacob are just some of the men with multiple wives – Solomon had 700 and an additional 300 concubines.

So Fitzgerald has to decide – the Bible is right and men can have multiple wives or it is wrong and gays can get married.

THE BIBLE ON GAY SEX AND OTHER “SINS”

The Bible may not address gay marriage but it does talk of gay sex. A frequently cited verse in support of discrimination against gays is Leviticus 20:13: “If a man has sexual relations with a man as one does with a woman, both of them have done what is detestable. They are to be put to death”. Seems pretty clear. But to be consistent we would also have to kill cheeky children -  four verses earlier Leviticus 20:9 says: “Anyone who curses their father or mother is to be put to death.”

True believers also quote Paul as saying the gays cannot get into heaven – but the full verse, 1 Corinthians 6:9-10, adds quite a few others to the proscribed list, to whit: “Neither the sexually immoral nor idolaters nor adulterers nor men who have sex with men,  nor thieves nor the greedy nor drunkards nor slanderers nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God”.

It has to be a fairly short line at the Pearly Gates.

BANK OF AMERICA RISKS GOD’S JUSTICE

North Carolina is also the site of Bank of America’s annual shareholders’ meeting. If Tami Fitzgerald is really motivated by biblical precepts she should join the crowd gathered at the Bank of America’s headquarters in Charlotte. The bible is clear on God’s opinion of abusive financial practices. Take Ezekiel 22:12: “In thee have they taken gifts to shed blood; thou hast taken usury and increase, and thou hast greedily gained of thy neighbours by extortion, and hast forgotten me, saith the Lord GOD”.

However, I doubt that Fitzgerald pays much attention to that verse.
