THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES WASTES TIME
The House of Representatives passed a bill repealing ’Obamacare’ – for the 33rd time. It will not pass the Senate. If it did, it would be vetoed by the President. The Republicans in the House know this. But think they can benefit politically.
OK. We get it. You hate ‘Obamacare’. Get over it and start working on the economy.
ROMNEY VISITS THE NAACP
Romney addressed the NAACP convention. He stuck to his conservative positions and received several rounds of lusty booing for his trouble. He even went so far as saying that as President he would be better for African- Americans than Obama. So why did he do it?
He knows that, no matter what he said, he wouldn’t pick up many black votes. But it was an opportunity to show the right-wing that he has discovered consistency. He can tell those conservatives, who still see him as a carpet-bagging opportunist, that he will stick to his guns even in the face of adversity.
CAN CALIFORNIA AFFORD THE DEATH PENALTY
Over the last 32 years California has spent $4 billion on the death penalty and executed 13 people. That works out to $308 million per execution.
The money wasn’t all spent on the executions of course, but mainly on multiple appeals and the fact that the average stay on death row is now approaching 30 years. In fact more death penalty prisoners die by suicide, or old age, than by execution.
Why we insist on being the only first world country with the death penalty is a mystery.
HEALTHCARE IN TEXAS
Texas has the highest rate of uninsured residents (27%) of any state. Rick Perry, current Governor and erstwhile primary punch-line, has announced that he will not set up the state insurance exchange mandated under ‘Obamacare’ – because he feels it is a federal intrusion into state business.
However, ‘Obamacare’ – in the absence of a state exchange – requires a federal exchange. It seems that in resisting federal intrusion Perry has incited it. A year ago we might have credited Perry with the political skill to appear to resist Washington, but still have Texas benefit. But after his primary performance, you do have to consider that he might just be dumb.
Perry is also rejecting the expansion of medicare that would expand coverage to 1.8 poor Texans. Politics over people.
