Rafael Cruz May Be Crazier than His Son.

in Politics, Religion

Rafael Cruz, Ted Cruz’s father, is a good argument that crazy is genetic and making stuff up runs in families. The following is a precis of an article in Mother Jones.

The Cruzes - two men, one mind.

The Cruzes – two men, one mind.

Cruz Sr. a Texas Pastor, runs an outfit called “Purifying Fire Ministries”. His son uses him to burnish his Christian fundamentalist. He is increasingly important to Cruz Jr’s political life. Unfortunately, unlike relatives that can broaden a candidate’s appeal (for example a wife that attracts women to a GOPer), Rafael Cruz is Ted’s political twin.

In a speech to the Tea Party of Hood County, Texas last April, Cruz declared that the United States is a “Christian nation”, bucking the newly preferred evangelical characterization “Judeo-Christian”. He insisted that the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution were a “divine revelation from God” and “were signed on the knees of the framers”.

He added, “our president has the gall to tell us that this is not a Christian nation”. And that, “The United States of America was formed to honor the word of God.”

In September of 2012, as Ted was running for Senate, he told the North Texas Tea Party that President Obama was an “outright Marxist”, who “seeks to destroy all concept of God”. He urged the crowd to send Obama “back to Kenya.”

A few weeks ago he told a gathering of Republicans in Colorado that Obama has vowed to “side with the Muslims,” that Obamacare mandates “suicide counseling” for the elderly, and that gay marriage is a plot to make “government your god.”

Dominionism flag

Dominionism flag

All of this is pretty standard stuff, but in August 2012 Cruz told the congregation at an Irving Texas megachurch that Christian true believers are “anointed” by God to “take dominion” of the world in “every area: society, education, government, and economics.”

In doing so, he shone a light on the Christian subset Dominionism (AKA Christian Reconstructionism) which believes “anointed” Christians are destined to establish a theocracy in the US. Cruz also endorsed the evangelical belief known as “end-time transfer of wealth” – in which as a prelude to the second coming of Christ, God will seize the wealth of the wicked and redistribute it to believers.

He quoted Proverbs 13:22, “And it is through the kings, anointed to take dominion, that that transfer of wealth is going to occur.” Could he possibly be referring to Ted?

In an admonition to the flock – revealing the dark mercenary underbelly of the movement – he said that this financial windfall will only accrue to those faithful that tithe. (Modern evangelicals seem to have a love of lucre that Jesus failed to mention in the Bible).

Rafael Cruz's dress code for women.

Rafael Cruz’s dress code for women.

In the same sermon, Rafael Cruz proved he is yet another conservative Christian determined to alienate women, saying, “As God commands us men to teach your wife, to teach your children—to be the spiritual leader of your family—you’re acting as a priest. Now, unfortunately, unfortunately, in too many Christian homes, the role of the priest is assumed by the wife”.

At the Hood County gathering, he noted that the “wicked” were now ruling the United States. He insisted “those death panels are in Obamacare,” and that the US government wants “to take all of your money” and confiscate “our fortunes.” He asserted that the Democratic Party promotes “everything that is contrary to the word of God.” He also exclaimed, “Social justice is a cancer. Social justice means you are ruled by whatever the mob does. What social justice does is destroy individual responsibility.”

Cruz Sr. is also no fan of unity or compromise. At a “freedom rally” at the Alamo in 2012, he vowed, “We’ve had enough compromise…enough of Establishment Republicans that don’t stand for anything.”

Cruz also trotted out the standard right-wing lie about socialized medicine,“everywhere in the world when socialized medicine has been instituted it takes 12 to 18 months to get any kind of medical proceeding”. (Note: Medicare is socialized medicine).

He believes that God is a Republican. In September, at a National Federation of Republican Assemblies event, he contended that after the 2012 election, God told him, “If we could blame one group of people for what happened in the last election, it is the pastors.” (It makes one wonder why God is not powerful enough to swing elections to the GOP.)

For Cruz politics and religion are two sides of the same coin. His world needs a “political savior” as much as a “spiritual savior”. Especially as Obama believes “government is your god.” And he has “a clear agenda…to destroy American exceptionalism”; “to achieve a “worldwide redistribution of wealth”; and “make us subject to the United Nations.”

Ted Cruz may have gone to Princeton and Harvard Law School, but the lessons that stuck are the ones learned on his father’s knee.

Patriotism Is an Action, Not a Slogan

October 30, 2013

“Patriotism is the last refuge of the scoundrel.” – Samuel Johnson. “In Dr. Johnson’s famous dictionary patriotism is defined as the last resort of a scoundrel. With all due respect to an enlightened but inferior lexicographer I beg to submit that it is the first.” – Ambrose Bierce. Patriotism is devalued coin in America. Jeep […]

Einstein’s Rules for Good Arguments. And How People with Bad Arguments Ignore Them.

October 25, 2013

“The difference between genius and stupidity is; genius has its limits.” – Albert Einstein Albert Einstein said two things, which taken together, define how to create and present a good argument. First he outlined how to craft a theory, “Everything should be made as simple as possible, but not simpler.” – echoing Occam’s Razor. Cut […]

Where Do Our Rights Come From?

October 22, 2013

It takes logical legerdemain to be a revisionist Christian conservative. Blinded by their faith in a specific Supreme Being there is a sect of rose-spectacled, wish-it-were-this-way, historians – who believe that America was created by Jesus Christ and God Himself came down from the heavens and bestowed natural rights on the citizens of the new […]

If It’s Organic It Must Be Good for You – Right?

October 21, 2013

Organic no longer means local farmers’ markets selling chemical free produce. Now it means industrial food slapping the organic label on every product imaginable as there is huge money to be made. Good food is real food, not processed food and certainly food without added sugar and salt. So does food in the supermarket’s organic […]

Why Creationism is Logically Indefensible.

October 20, 2013

We may yet discover that the theory of evolution is not correct, but we already know that creationism is a fiction. It boils down to the scientific method. A story reported in the NY Times illustrates my point. Eight years ago paleontologists discovered a 1.8-million-year-old, hominid skull in the Republic of Georgia. Years of studying it have […]

The Geography of Hate

October 19, 2013

Floating Sheep and Humboldt State University in northern California collaborated to produce “Geography of Hate” maps like this one that track racist and homophobic tweets in the United States, based on the use of slurs such as the N-word, “wetback” and “fag.” Congratulations to the western half of the country for your lack of hate.
