Pat Robertson’s ‘War on Halloween’.

Every holiday season it’s the same. First ‘Christians’ claim there is a ‘War on Christmas’ – and then they mount a ‘War on Halloween’.

In that conflict, there is no more dauntless warrior than the venerable Pat Robertson. His biography is stained with failure, yet he clings to the absurdity that trick or treating kids – dressed in adorable costumes and soliciting candy – are Satan’s spawn, celebrating demons.

What’s it like to be so scared? (h/t Right Wing Watch)

It’s not your father’s Halloween.

It isn’t just Pat, Jack Hayford, whoever he is, has also taken issue with this happy day. In a piece on the subject, he remembers with fondness his youthful dash around the neighborhood collecting candy. But he would deny today’s kids the same innocent joys.

The Halloween enemy

The Halloween enemy

To Hayford, evil has corrupted Halloween into a celebration of wickedness. In his words: “Innocent pranks have become vandalism, mischievousness has become indulgence in filth, witches aren’t just costumes, and the treats given out can no longer be trusted as safe to eat.”

He has a solution. Let local churches offer ‘harvest celebrations’ that are, “packed with fun, food, action, games, costumes, goodies and, to top it all off, a look at Jesus”.

So to Christians, Halloween is not a Christian holiday, but Christians should celebrate it as if it is – to hell with the non-Christian kids. (h/t Charisma News)

Religion can lead to mental illness.

For some ‘Christians’ even Hayford’s suggestion is too wishy-washy. Let John Burton explain:

“I propose we eliminate all supposed Christian Halloween alternatives and instead make it clear that we as Christians will have nothing to do with such a demonic celebration. We wouldn’t look for an alternative to a night devoted to murder or child abuse, so how can we attempt to do so with a night devoted to witchcraft? It’s an abomination. In fact, I’d argue that Halloween is, in fact, celebrating murder and child abuse.

Instead of seeking an innocent alternative, hold a late-night prayer meeting, with all of the kids and the entire family. Prayer walk the city. Pray in the Spirit. Instead of ignoring late-night coven meetings, we must counteract them with late-night Holy Spirit intercession meetings.”

Good luck with that. These kids will think their parents are the Devil. (h/t Charisma News)

Beating kids for Jesus.

Everyone is entitled to their religion. But they aren’t entitled to foist it on others. And they certainly can’t use it to justify child abuse. Which is what Kin Park Thaing tried to do. This Indiana mother used the state’s Religious Freedom Restoration Act as cover for thrashing her her 7-year-old son so badly a teacher found 36 dark purple welts on him.

Kin’s defense was rooted in such biblical verses as Proverbs 23:13-14: “Do not withhold discipline from a child; if you strike him with a rod, he will not die. If you strike him with the rod, you will save his soul from Sheol.”

She was found guilty of ‘moderate bodily harm’ and sentenced to a year. But she won’t do time – just probation. God help her children. (h/t WaPo)

Love is not a Christian virtue.

LifeWay is a Christian enterprise with a large retail operation. But it will no longer sell any books by the prominent Christian author Jen Hatmaker. LifeWay threw her out on her ear for heresy. Specifically, this ‘apostate’ said:

“From a civil rights and civil liberties side and from just a human being side, any two adults have the right to choose who they want to love. And they should be afforded the same legal protections as any of us. I would never wish anything less for my gay friends.”

That was altogether too much love for this bunch of ‘Christians’ to get their head around. (h/t Charisma News)

God can’t defeat evil – or does he even want to?

The sanctimonious are skeptical that atheists can lead moral lives. Their rationale is that people don’t inherently know right from wrong, And that without the admonishment of a guy in the sky, no one would do the right thing. But where’s the evidence?

Take Victorious Life Church’s Pastor, Terry Wayne Millender, and his wife, Brenda. They have been arrested for perpetrating a $1.2 million fraud. They join an interminable list of so-called religious folk steeped in sins of sex, violence, and embezzlement. (h/t Charisma News)

There the GOP Goes Again (Email Edition).

October 30, 2016

Since 1992, the GOP has been throwing mud at Hillary Clinton; even accusing her of murder. And more. The rabid right wing treasures hyperbole and overkill. They don’t just take up a cause, they beat it to death. How else do you explain eight committee investigations of her role in Benghazi – time after time finding […]

The GOP Believes the Constitution Mandates Only Republicans Pick Supreme Court Justices.

October 29, 2016

After Justice Scalia died, conservatives were faced with a left-shifting Supreme Court. Obama wasn’t going to nominate anyone nearly as right-wing as Scalia. In reaction, Republican Senators took the extraordinary step of making up a new tradition – and ignored Obama’s nominee Merrick Garland. Out of whole cloth, they created a new ‘rule’ – that […]

Even if Trump Won There Would Be No Wall.

October 24, 2016

White nationalists salivate over the prospect of a Trump win. They believe that he will deal with the ‘problem’ of immigration. He will rid the country of raping Mexicans and peace will descend across white America. I don’t know what happens to non-white American citizens in this fantasy. Not that it matters – the wall is a […]

Who Will Run Against Hillary In 2020?

October 20, 2016

In 2015, the Republicans were ecstatic about their slate of candidates. The Democrats, not so much. The Republicans were a diverse, vibrant group of up and comers, experienced politicians, business people, and a renowned surgeon. The Democrats were a widely disliked woman, a curmudgeon who wasn’t even a Democrat, an ex-governor nobody knew, another ex-Governor who had […]

Can Trump Still Win? Does He Even Want To?

October 19, 2016

There is no polling data showing Trump winning the election. The experts are clear. They have Hillary as a lock to win 254+ Electoral College votes. Leaving her needing only one or two of the toss-up states to reach the 270 she needs. Trump, on the other hand, has to run the table. And he’s running […]

Republicans Don’t Believe Anything Except the Incredible.

October 17, 2016

It is naive to believe everything. It is cynical to believe nothing. And it is mind-bogglingly dumb to believe what is patently false – while disbelieving that for which there is overwhelming evidence. Let’s look at some examples. Trump – and his fanatics – celebrate so-called ‘snap polls’ as proof of overwhelming debate victories. These online polls […]

Libertarianism: Because America Needs Another Excuse for Avarice

October 13, 2016

Libertarianism promotes lung cancer. Extreme? Not really. Libertarians think government should have no role regulating the marketplace. If they had been in charge, the Surgeon-General – had there even been one – would not have investigated the tobacco/cancer connection. Furthermore, there would be no health warning labels on cigarette packs – there would be cigarette ads on […]

The Picture of Donald Trump.

October 8, 2016

In Oscar Wilde’s ‘The Picture of Dorian Gray” the protagonist is granted eternal youth and beauty. In turn, his sins are visited on a picture painted of him. In the book, Dorian does indeed remain ethereally young and beautiful, but his picture ages. The horror of Dorian’s evil ways changes his painted face into a carbuncular, […]
