Sex-ed.

“I believe a Christian muffler shop owner should have the same right to refuse service to a gay couple, as a gay lifeguard has to refuse service to a drowning Christian.” Quentin R. Bufogle

The Irish overwhelmingly voted to legalize gay marriage in Ireland. God shows his approval for equal rights in the skies over Dublin.

The Vatican, on the other hand, is not so thrilled with the Irish vote. Cardinal Pietro Parolin, the Vatican’s Secretary of State, said of the result, “I don’t think you can speak only about a defeat for Christian principles but a defeat for humanity”. Leaving aside the hyperbole, it’s hard to imagine Jesus saying that. (h/t Huff Post)

Rule #1, don’t forget to renew your domain names. The Open Door Baptist Church in Easley, South Carolina – an anti-gay hate-group – failed to do so. Now if you click on www.warningsofwrath.com you will be directed to a hard-core gay porn site. Let me speculate, however, that many homophobes so redirected will spend hours ‘researching’ the enemy. Put another way, straight men don’t obsess about gay sex. (h/t Samuel-Warde.com)

The revelation of Josh Duggar’s incestuous molestation has exposed, yet again, the hypocrisy of so many on the religious right. But to some, the Duggars are not right enough. Zsuzsanna Anderson (not a misspelling), the wife of an Arizona preacher writes a blog, ‘ARE THEY ALL YOURS?!??’. In it she says, “We have for years held and publicly stated that the Duggars are liberal and worldly.”

By her standards, I’m sure they are. After all, this is a woman whose husband (who has the chutzpah to call himself a Christian) once predicted an AIDS-free Christmas if all gays were killed. Which, besides the sheer hatefulness of the comment, displays a profound ignorance of the disease. (h/t Raw Story)

Fundamentalists deal with abuse as they deal with everything. Injecting some irrelevancies about the ‘spirit’ and blaming the victim. In their imaging the little harlots, in their immodest wantonness, seduced the poor abuser into his sin. Consider this ‘Christian’ instruction on how to recover from abuse. (Particularly item 4.)

Sex abuse

Nebraskans are debating whether to extend the laws banning discrimination to cover sexual orientation. The good folk have offered their opinions both pro and con. Some thoughtful, some hysterical and then one offering which can only be described as insane. Without ruining the punchline, let me just say the speaker addresses ‘anus licking’; ‘gays, bis and orgiers’ in Dutch TV production; why Whitney Houston was found naked; ‘homociders’ and ‘genociders’; and more.

“Nothing in the world is more dangerous than sincere ignorance and conscientious stupidity” ― Martin Luther King Jr. You want to raise your kids as good Christians – particularly your daughters. “We often confuse what we wish for with what is.” – Neil Gaiman There are some who desperately want the the world to be, as as they want it to be. Others try to understand the world as it is. Let’s name them the “wishers” and the “realists”. Take the legalization of pot in Colorado. Wishers […]

Lies Conservatives Tell About Abortion & Contraception – with Two Hypocrisies Thrown In.

November 12, 2013

“Those who are capable of tyranny are capable of perjury to sustain it.” – Lysander Spooner. Here are a few perjuries. Abortion is dangerous. While abortion has risks, having an abortion is a lot safer than giving birth. In the US there are 21 maternal deaths per 100,000 live births versus 9 deaths per 100,000 abortions […]

Abstinence-only sex education harms our children.

July 26, 2013

Why are STD rates so high in states with high church attendance? Is it God punishing the innocents for sexual transgressions. Or could it be a preference for abstinence-only sex ed? Most evangelicals – unlike some extreme fundamentalists – will take their sick children to the doctor, instead of praying for a cure, even to […]

Does Religion Cause Teenage Pregnancy?

July 20, 2013

There is a movement in this country to recriminalise abortion at the state level – especially in those states comprising the “bible belt” – and in states with rabid Republican state governments (though the two are usually the same). In those same states there is also a movement to reduce sex ed in schools to “abstinence only” […]

Sex-ed is not “dirty” and ignorance is not divine. Lessons from the fact based world

July 3, 2013

“Sex education is legitimate in that girls cannot be taught soon enough how children don’t come into the world.” – Karl Krauss. State Senator Wendy Davis (D-TX) became a folk hero for her 11-hour filibuster against Texas’s sweeping anti-abortion legislation. On the other side of the abortion debate are the usual (often tired and old) men […]
