Education

Al Franken said of Betsy DeVos“During her hearing, Ms. DeVos proved beyond a shadow of a doubt not only that her ideology is fundamentally incompatible with the mission of the Department of Education, but that she is fundamentally incompetent to be its leader.”

Election winners get to pick their nominees. They will choose those whose politics they like. But that does not explain why 2017 has seen a level of cabinet incompetence unknown since the Harding administration. Ben Carson was a great surgeon. But the GOP primaries revealed him as a ‘looney tunes’. Rick Perry once couldn’t remember the Department he is nominated for. And even in remembering it, had no idea what it does.

With DeVos’s confirmation, the Republicans have admitted that ability is irrelevant in Republican cabinets. All that counts is ideology and deep pockets. Pity the children, if Michigan’s dismal education experiment is rolled out to all the other states.

Donald Trump tells lies that are easily disprovable. Why? Who knows. Let better brains than mine explain. His latest whopper is the absurd claim that murders are at a 45-year high. No fact supports his assertion. Statistics render his position ridiculous. What in his mind justifies his inanity? You will have to ask him.

No reputable news source is giving Trump a break on his patent lie that the media isn’t covering terrorism. Even Fox News isn’t buying it. Shep Smith‘s view on the subject: “The president’s assertion is false. The White House knows that it was false or could have known that it was false with a quick Google check, but either did not do so or decided not to tell the truth.”

Jake Tapper had led the charge against the Trump administration’s demonization of the media. Today his guest was the Dean of Denial – the lone voice in remembrance of the Bowling Green Massacre – Kellyanne Conway. Her justification for Trump’s lying? “Are they [Trump’s lies] more important than the many things that he says that are true that are making a difference in people’s lives?”

To which I ask, what has he said that is true?

Trump met with sheriffs from around the country. Sheriff Harold Eavenson of Rockwall, TX complained about a state senator who he claimed was making it harder for cops to get control of assets forfeited by drug traffickers. Trump offered to ‘destroy’ the politician’s career. Destroy? Really? Presidential? Hardly. Mindless braggadocio is a quality found in town drunks and angry people.

Christianity and Unplanned Pregnancy.

May 25, 2015

“Nothing in the world is more dangerous than sincere ignorance and conscientious stupidity” ― Martin Luther King Jr. You want to raise your kids as good Christians – particularly your daughters. So you demand that your children ‘save it’ for marriage. To promote this, you create such monstrosities as ‘purity balls’ – where daughters pledge […]

May 3, 2015

Religion Is a Poor Guide for Running a Country.

November 9, 2014

Religion rarely leads to good decision making. In that way, it is like alcohol. The more you consume, the dumber you act. I am not talking about God mind you. Nor the worship of him. Instead I refer to the soul-crushing ignorance and stupidity attendant on those who blindly use the old books to find […]

Tear It Down – The Republican Plan for America

October 28, 2014

The GOP hates the Affordable Care Act (aka the ACA, aka Obamacare). It’s hate is hypocritical, as it mirrors a health initiative proposed by the GOP in 1994 to forestall talk of a possible Democraticsingle payer plan. But as it is today closely identified with its eponymous promoter – the President, whose name is now mud […]

School Vouchers are a Subterfuge to Benefit the Rich and Subsidize Religion.

May 18, 2014

The Tea Party and establishment Republicans agree on some things – school vouchers for one. Both Jeb Bush and Ted Cruz are fans of this transfer of money. Especially as they have opportunistically linked it to civil rights. A two for one deal. It warms the cockles of the conservative heart to ship public money to private interests. And […]

We Teach Our Kids How to Drive Smart. Shouldn’t We Teach Them How to Drink Smart?

March 19, 2014

A Canadian study shows that raising the drinking age saves lives. Statistically young men slightly older than the legal drinking age are more likely to die in car accidents and other alcohol related events, than young men slightly younger than the drinking age. And this effect tracks with increases in the legal drinking age. All of […]
