“Hatred is the coward’s revenge for being intimidated” ― George Bernard Shaw.

Like many chickenhawks, Scott Walker’s solution to the Middle East’s troubles may involve a reinvasion of the area. If it is that critical, will Walker’s two military age sons enlist? Or would Walker just throw other people’s children in harms way?

I think it would wonderfully focus the mind, of those who would go to war so casually, if fighting went hand in glove with a universal – no exceptions – draft. All in – or no one in. (h/t Washington Examiner)

The militarization of the police has led to the police adoption of military tactics. In Greenwood, CO, a shoplifter, who shot at the police before evading them, holed up in the house of the unfortunate Leo Lech. After a 20 hour stand-off, the police blew up Lech’s home to capture the suspect.

No one thinks the police should put themselves in harms way. But surely there are less drastic means of capturing a suspect. As Lech himself said, ‘In any civilized nation … this is the act of paramilitary thugs.’ (h/t Daily Mail)

Not Baghdad, Iraq - but Greenwood, Colorado.

The McKinney police have added their name to the roles of over-reaction. The local police were called to the scene of a ‘crime’ – ti whit, too many black kids having fun at a pool party. Instead of peacefully sorting it out, the police went into full crazy mode, including an officer who pulled a gun on a 14-year-old girl, he had thrown to the sidewalk.

Luckily the police protestations of innocence were rendered as so much wind in the face of a video of the event. (h/t The Guardian)

Anti-Gay Marriage Activism is Getting Old. Not That the 2016 GOP Field Noticed.

April 3, 2015

“Be yourself; everyone else is already taken” ― Oscar Wilde. It isn’t often that two-term Presidents are followed by a President of the same party. The last time was when George HW Bush succeeded Reagan. So, on the face of it, the Republicans are well set to win the 2016 general election. Also working in […]

For-Profit Punishment. Making Money From Misery.

March 26, 2015

“Criminals do not die by the hands of the law. They die by the hands of other men” ― George Bernard Shaw One of the best-known – and most misunderstood – legal admonishments in the Bible is Matthew 5:38 “An eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth.” Law and order types take […]

Can the GOP Improve its Image? Or Would That Just Be Polishing Dirt?

March 2, 2015

“True terror is to wake up one morning and discover that your high school class is running the country.” ― Kurt Vonnegut The GOP is extremely good at rigging the political system. But they are lousy at politics – tin-eared in fact. In short, they are good at majority – but nobody likes them. In many […]

Is America a Civilized Country?

December 13, 2014

“There are many humorous things in the world; among them, the white man’s notion that he is less savage than the other savages.” ― Mark Twain. To a self-referential US conservative the only safe place is white America and its country cousins Europe and the Antipodes. The Islamic world is a chaos of homicidal fury. The […]

People Are Regulated. Corporations Are Supposedly People. So Why Shouldn’t Corporations Be Regulated.

November 14, 2014

Deregulation is a transfer of power from the trodden to the treading. It is unsurprising that all conservative parties claim to hate big government.” ― George Monbiot Industrial food is in the market to make money – not to feed people. Sure it makes food, but a review of the major players’ annual reports will show a […]

The Presidential Six-Year Itch.

November 7, 2014

No President has sailed through two terms accoladed by the public and lauded by the media. The sixth year, in particular, is a hard one – especially as the mid-terms provide a clear score card on the incumbent. This time around the voters gave Obama a thorough spanking. But his misery is in good company. […]
