Mike Huckabee says that  gay marriage for Christians is like forcing a Jewish deli owner to serve bacon wrapped shrimp. It is a specious argument. Nobody is forcing Christian clergy to perform gay marriages. Nor are they mandating that Christians have same-sex marriages.

Perhaps Huckabee is alluding to the Christian baker forced to bake cakes for gay weddings. But even here the comparison is wrong. The law says that if you sell wedding cakes you cannot discriminate. You can, however, chose to not sell wedding cakes. Just as a Jewish deli can chose not to sell bacon wrapped shrimp, but cannot chose to refuse service to Christians. h/t Dail Mail

Texas has just passed a law – ‘The Teacher’s Protection Act’ – that shields teachers from prosecution if they kill their students. They have to believe that they “need to protect themselves” – whatever that means.

It also allows teachers to use deadly force to protect school property, and to avoid prosecution “for injury or death that results from the educator’s use of deadly force. h/t Houston Chronicle

John Geer was an unarmed man, with his hands in the air, when he was shot dead by a cop. That cop, Adam Torres, justified the killing by claiming Geer had been reaching for something at his waist. His account was contradicted by 4 witnesses. Not 4 run-of-the-mill citizens, but 4 cops.

Adam Torres arrived at the scene just after arguing with his wife – his judgement apparently impaired. And he was known to have anger management issues – once cursing at an assistant prosecutor before storming off. Why was he still a cop? h/t Washington Post

Religion Is a Poor Guide for Running a Country.

November 9, 2014

Religion rarely leads to good decision making. In that way, it is like alcohol. The more you consume, the dumber you act. I am not talking about God mind you. Nor the worship of him. Instead I refer to the soul-crushing ignorance and stupidity attendant on those who blindly use the old books to find […]

School Vouchers are a Subterfuge to Benefit the Rich and Subsidize Religion.

May 18, 2014

The Tea Party and establishment Republicans agree on some things – school vouchers for one. Both Jeb Bush and Ted Cruz are fans of this transfer of money. Especially as they have opportunistically linked it to civil rights. A two for one deal. It warms the cockles of the conservative heart to ship public money to private interests. And […]

Texas – Not so Miraculous

August 1, 2013

Rick Perry has been on a tour offering up Texas as a great place to do business; promoting its low tax rates and regulatory laxity. It is a great place to own a business – put it is not such a great place to be an employee. Despite being ranked 16th among states by employment […]

Paula Deen, the Supreme Court, prisons and schools show us that racial equality is still elusive.

June 25, 2013

We like to think that, as a country, we have moved beyond racism. But all evidence points to the contrary. You might think that having a black President would be proof that we are now a country, where people are judged by the content of their character, and not the color of their skin. But Paula […]
