Ben Carson

Appetizer.

Ben Carson was concluding a visit to Miami’s Courtside Family Apartments when he got stuck in an elevator for 20 minutes. Let the headlines write themselves.

Trump’s core principle is to have no core principles.

Donald Trump is ‘unpredictable’ in his own words. He says that it is an advantage in negotiations. Others say that it is merely a lack of core convictions. Take Syria. When Barack Obama was President, Trump tweeted like an ADHD kid on a sugar rush about the dangers of attacking Assad. People who track these things turned up 18 tweets – but let one make the point (yelling and all):

His apologists excuse his rantings as the musings of a private citizen. And you could argue that things have changed in three years. Especially if you don’t explain what has changed.

But Syria isn’t his only 180º. There was his evolution from universal better, cheaper healthcare coverage to his ‘it’s crap, and it’s expensive, but you don’t have to have it’ philosophy.

Now in a press conference with NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg, he allowed of NATO, “I said it was obsolete, it’s no longer obsolete”. He gave himself credit for this improvement in the venerable organization. “I complained about that a long time ago and they made a change, and now they do fight terrorism.”

Rational observers will point out that Trump’s ‘a long time ago’ is January and that NATO hasn’t changed much since. Stotlenberg himself pointed out that over 1,000 NATO soldiers were killed in Afghanistan.

But wait, there’s more. Trump spent his entire campaign complaining that China manipulated its currency. Well, guess what – in a new interview with the Wall Street Journal, Trump said of China “They’re not currency manipulators”.

And more. Trump also expressed admiration for campaign bete noire, Fed head, Janet Yellen. And said the Import-Export Bank was OK by him. It’s almost as if could be his own Neville Chamberlain – except in reverse.

Legacy.

Complete with the surplus apostrophe.

What we’ve learned about the Department of Education.

Betty DeVos has a message for those of you who think that the mission of the Department of Education is to improve the education of America’s kids. She is a proponent of charter schools – which is a euphemism for taking scarce education dollars and buy large houses for the owners of ‘for profit’ education companies.

So it would be no surprise is she had hit the ground promoting school vouchers. At least she would putatively have been addressing education.

But her first directive was to remove Obama-era rules making it harder for private school loan companies to gouge their customers. Establishing that the number one educational problem in the US is that student loan sharks aren’t making enough money.

Dessert.

In an interview with Fox Business’ Maria Bartiromo Trump described the occasion he told the Chinese President about the Syria missile strike. “We had finished dinner. We’re now having dessert. And we had the most beautiful piece of chocolate cake that you’ve ever seen. President Xi was enjoying it.”

It sounds more like a proposal. In Trump’s case an indecent proposal.

Who Will Run Against Hillary In 2020?

October 20, 2016

In 2015, the Republicans were ecstatic about their slate of candidates. The Democrats, not so much. The Republicans were a diverse, vibrant group of up and comers, experienced politicians, business people, and a renowned surgeon. The Democrats were a widely disliked woman, a curmudgeon who wasn’t even a Democrat, an ex-governor nobody knew, another ex-Governor who had […]

August 18, 2016

Donald Trump is having problems. But not to worry he has a strategy. The most dishonest politician in living memory has impugned “crooked Hillary’s” own veracity – repeatedly. Unfortunately for him, the Republicans have been throwing so much dirt at her – for so long – more mud is not noticeable. The American voter has already […]

“A casual stroll through the lunatic asylum shows that faith does not prove anything.” ― Friedrich Nietzsche Ben Carson has been making some noise recently. Apparently, he is on Trump’s committee to identify Le Grand Orange’s running mate. He let the VP cat out of the bag by admitting that John Kasich, Marco Rubio, Ted Cruz, Sarah Palin […]

“Conservatives are not necessarily stupid, but most stupid people are conservatives” – John Stuart Mill Muslim bans, bathroom rules, dick size, glowing sand, women bleeding – has the GOP lost its mind? The Republican presidential candidate in all likelihood will be a large orange hairball who believes that he can solve America’s problems by negotiating better. Or […]

March 15, 2016

“After a good dinner one can forgive anybody, even one’s own relations.” ― Oscar Wilde Ben Carson endorsed Donald Trump. He had two reasons. “I believe that a scientist looking at nonscientific problems is just as dumb as the next guy.” ― Richard Feynman. This is the saddest headline I’ve seen in a while: **************************************************** Let not his dismal performance in New Hampshire dissuade the good doctor.
