Vladimir Putin

How do you sum up Donald Trump’s G-20 meetings? Let’s just say that in one session Ivanka Trump took his place and it made no difference. It did, however, raise the question: Why her? Didn’t we have a Secretary of State, or some other qualified person, available? Substituting your kid when you need a break is something done in monarchies. And this close to the Fourth of July, is hereditary rule an image we want to celebrate?

Ivanka Trump “Bring your daughter to work today”.

And we can thank the Russians for the image of Ivanka hanging out with Theresa May and Vladimir Putin. You know they like stirring the pot.

Talking about stirring the pot, the Russians have done better than they could possibly have dared hope. Vladimir Putin announced that Trump is satisfied that they didn’t interfere in the election. Is he satisfied? We’ll have to assume so, as he hasn’t said anything to the contrary. In fact, his only comment on the meeting was that it was ‘tremendous’ – whatever that means.

Back in the US, he tweeted, “I strongly pressed President Putin twice about Russian meddling in our election. He vehemently denied it. I’ve already given my opinion…..” Because of course if someone denies they did something – especially if the deny it vehemently – then they didn’t do it.

Reince Preibus went further. He said, “The President absolutely did not believe the denial of President Putin.” I suppose we’ll just have to take his word for it. Although Trump does throw doubt on how absolute ‘absolutely’ is with another tweet saying, “Putin & I discussed forming an impenetrable Cyber Security unit so that election hacking, & many other negative things, will be guarded..”

The idea that we should hold hands with an enemy has caused consternation – and engendered black humor – across the political spectrum. Epitomized by suggestions that we should form a partnership with ISIS to combat terrorism.

But while Russia is in the headlines – especially as Donald Trump Jr. admitted that he had met with a Russian lawyer, who promised dirt on Hillary Clinton – Trump Sr.’s general incompetence hurt America’s interests more severely.

Trump talks to all his friends.

Trump may fancy himself a ‘tough negotiator’, but he is a hero only in his own mind. His dismissive attitude to climate agreements and trade pacts has alienated allies – to the point that the world has moved on. And the G-20 is now the G-19.

The Chinese, Japanese, Germans, and French don’t do feckless. Russia has nukes and China is building a military. The West thought it needed America. But now that America has proved an inconstant friend – and as such too unreliable to be counted on.

On second thought perhaps we would be better off if Ivanka substituted for dad on a permanent basis.

Donald Trump Thinks He Came Out Ahead in the Comey Thing.

June 11, 2017

Donald Trump thinks he had a good week. He crows that, one, the Comey testimony has absolved him of any wrong-doing in the Russian brouhaha. Two, that he hasn’t been under investigation. And three, that there is no evidence pointing to his complicity in an electoral fix. But as he smirks his victory grimace he should consider the arc of […]

Really? – 5.29.17 – Macron Shows How It’s Done; A Bad Boss; ODS; AHCA

May 29, 2017

Vive la France The President stood next to Vladamir Putin and accused Russia of spreading “fake news” and “propaganda” during the presidential election. Adding that RT and Sputnik were “organs of influence and propaganda” and “behaved like structures of the government”. It’s too bad for America that the President was France’s Emmanuel Macron.  And I guarantee that […]

Really? 3.3.17 – Just How Big a Racist Liar is Sessions? (Plus a Dollop of Trump)

March 3, 2017

Jeff Sessions defended his lie that he hadn’t talked to the Russians. His grounds? He said he took the question to refer to contacts he may have had as a proxy for the Trump campaign. In Sessions’ mind, his chats with the Russian ambassador were part of his senatorial duties and therefore did not merit a mention. A thin […]

Republicans: The Pygmy Party in Putin’s Thrall.

February 19, 2017

Donald Trump’s early days as President have not been good. His one major initiative – the Muslim ban – was iced by the judiciary – and now he has withdrawn it. His National Security Adviser caressed the Russians, lied to the FBI, and resigned. His putative replacement looked at the job and said ‘not with a […]

Really? 2.9.17 – Kellyanne’s Unethical Ivanka Ad; A Disheartened Gorsuch; A Clueless Trump

February 9, 2017

Ivanka Trump‘s fashion line was dropped by Neiman-Marcus, Nordstrom’s and several websites. It has been relegated to the general racks at Marshall’s and T.J. Maxx. Dad said that’s ‘unfair’. And today Kellyanne Conway demanded of Fox News viewers that they buy Ivanka’s stuff. The Trump administration’s message is clearly “Don’t buy American”. Update: Sean Spicer reveals that […]

Really? – 2.5.17 – Trump Promotes Putin & Demeans America’s Judiciary

February 5, 2017

Bill O’Reilly asked Donald Trump why he respected President Vladimir V. Putin of Russia even though he is “a killer”. Trump replied, “You got a lot of killers. What, you think our country’s so innocent?”. We are in charted territory when the President draws a moral equivalence between the United States and Russia. A country where […]

Republicans Have the Impulse Control of Drunk Teens.

January 6, 2017

In the 1770s, chaffing under the yoke of English oppression, the American revolutionaries stated their grievances and rose against an oppressive power. They took up arms, broke their shackles, and fought. And while they fought, the intellectuals and politicians hammered out a roadmap to a new nation. They had a plan. That, my friends, is how […]

Really? – 12.21.15 – DWS Boosts Her BFF Hillary; Trump’s Bromance; Fiorina’s Howler

December 20, 2015

I have been thinking that I would make a proposition to my Republican friends… that if they will stop telling lies about the Democrats, we will stop telling the truth about them. – Adlai E. Stevenson The Democrats had a debate yesterday. Nobody watched. It was the second of three debates scheduled for a weekend night. Why […]
