Patriotism Is an Action, Not a Slogan

in Patriotism

“Patriotism is the last refuge of the scoundrel.” – Samuel Johnson.

“In Dr. Johnson’s famous dictionary patriotism is defined as the last resort of a scoundrel. With all due respect to an enlightened but inferior lexicographer I beg to submit that it is the first.” – Ambrose Bierce.

Patriotism is devalued coin in America. Jeep makes the “Patriot” and the “Liberty”. Unimaginative minds named the new World Trade Center the “Freedom Tower” until more sensible minds prevailed. The Congressional commissariat christened a side dish “Freedom Fries” after the perfidious French refused to toe the US line.

Provincial politicians called an Orwellian concoction – that increased state spying on its citizens – the USA PATRIOT ACT (Full title the “Uniting (and) Strengthening America (by) Providing Appropriate Tools Required (to) Intercept (and) Obstruct Terrorism” Act of 2001)

Congressmen, their retinues, and hangers-on, slap flag pins to their labels. The common man measures his patriotism by the size and quantity of flags on his property. Hand-on-heart we silently mouth the words to the national anthem before sports events.

Our cars are bill-boards for patriotism – with bumper stickers, yellow ribbons and magnet flags declaring “these colors do not run” plastered all over – even on foreign autos.

It is facile patriotism, without risk or cost. It is go-out-and-shop, ostentatious patriotism. It is a service-free patriotism.

The only true patriots are people who have done something for their country – actions speak louder than words.

Chest thumping conservatives named their SiriusXM Radio conduit the “Patriot channel”. Sean Hannity calls his radio acolytes “real Americans” – the small-town, “fly-over country” kind.

And these “real Americans” want their “country back” – a country presumably in the hands of “not-real Americans”.

“Not-real Americans” like atheists, Muslims and people who have sex before marriage. (Actually you can be a “real American” and have sex before marriage – if you promise that you will not).

Like gays and Mexican-Americans, sex-ed proponents, gun-control freaks, environmentalists and others with an agenda.

Like government workers, trades unionists, university professors, and city-dwelling, hybrid-driving, white-wine swilling, quiche eaters.

Like the welfare queens, the hammock-lolling unemployed, the food stamp gourmands and the other takers

Like liberals and big government types, working hand-in-glove with the UN to steal US sovereignty, confiscate guns, redesign cities, close golf courses, and take away property rights.

In short everyone that does not fit the “real American” profile – created by the self-appointed “real Americans”

Of course, to be a “real American” you only have to be an American – after all, it is a free country.
