Mike Huckabee Claims God Solves Racism. History Be Damned.

in Racism, Religion

“That men do not learn very much from the lessons of history is the most important of all the lessons that history has to teach” ― Aldous Huxley

In reaction to the Charleston massacre, Mike Huckabee advised that there be fewer conversations and more conversions. Go to God he says because, in Huckabee’s philosophy, God solves racism. It’s a depressingly clueless claim – unsupported by any evidence. Yet, we shouldn’t be surprised – most claims for religion fly in the face of facts

This belief in the Divine’s salutary effect on morality is a given. It is an article of faith among the religious that you cannot be good without God and that God makes you better. There is a mix of self-satisfaction and desperation to the claim. The faithful are smug in their holier-than-thou attitude, but it masks a deep insecurity that their assertions are so much smoke.

Take Huckabee’s claim that God and racism are incompatible. That race hate is unknown in Christian communities. It’s patently absurd. Dear God, southern slave owners used the Bible to justify slavery. And there is no greater racism than saying one race is subject to ownership while others aren’t.

Racism is not uniquely a southern phenomenon, but the laws and policies of southern states are redolent of racism. Voting ID laws disproportionately affect minorities. The refusal to accept the expansion of  Medicaid does likewise. Shredding the safety net is a regional hobby.

And underpinning all this racist acrimony is a high rate of church going.

God is evidently very much in the racism business.
