“When Mexico sends its people, they’re not sending the best. They’re not sending you, they’re sending people that have lots of problems and they’re bringing those problems with us. They’re bringing drugs. They’re bringing crime. They’re rapists.”Donald Trump.

Donald Trump rode into the presidential joust on the back of Mexican rapists. His debate entry was of the “only women bleed” school. And his campaign strategy was schoolboy shots at the competition. It could only be a temporary entertainment – right?  But – and nobody predicted this – he’s not just still in the hunt, he’s in the lead.

The GOP voter has shown an immense delight in the basest, crudest language. The establishment adults were gobsmacked as the presumptive nominee, party grandee, Jeb Bush followed Walker, Santorum, Huckabee, Fiorina, Jindal, Christie, Gilmore, Graham, Paul, Pataki and Perry to the bench. Left standing are madmen, liars and John Kasich.

Screen Shot 2016-02-29 at 8.13.20 PMIn reality, the race is down to two, Marco Rubio and the large orange id. And after showing restraint, the man from Miami has thrown himself into the mud pit. The discourse is now of the “you’re a poopy-head – no you’re a poppy-head” kind. Trump brought up the ‘robot Rubio’ slur. Marco slammed back that Donald was the limited idea candidate.

Trump smeared Rubio as the sweaty candidate. Marco said Donald is the shiny one. He added that Trump had wet his pants. Criticised his spray tan. And dove deeper in the mud by implying that Trump’s small hands reflected a small dick. No, I’m not making this up. This is how the GOP conducts its primaries.

The media loves it. Ratings are through the roof. As Leslie Moonves said of the Trump campaign, “It may not be good for America, but it’s damn good for CBS”. Yes, the Republican primary race isn’t a political boon, but it’s damn good for ratings.

The Republican establishment doesn’t know what to make of it. On the one hand, you have the enthusiastic Trump fans. Sen. Jeff Sessions (R-AL) loves Donald’s xenophobia. Chris Christie has his eye on the Attorney General prize. On the other, there’s the “we’ll do it, but we won’t like it” vote for Trump, nose-holders – perhaps surprisingly, including Rubio and Cruz.

And finally there is the “no way” contingent – say Sen. Ben Sasse (R-NE). Sasse says he will never vote for Trump. His reason, “Trump’s relentless focus is on dividing Americans, and on tearing down rather than building back up this glorious nation.” Sasse is either blind to irony or just blind. He is a Tea Partier. And that lot has shown a giddy delight in dividing Americans.

In the distant mists of campaign beginning, the GOP was peacock proud of its healthy slate of mature, talented and experienced candidates. But the GOP voter said ‘you can keep them guys, we want ourselves a slice of chicken-fried Trump, smothered with the white gravy’. And he is odds-on favorite to win.

Isaiah 29:13:  And the Lord said: “Because this people draw near with their mouth and honor me with their lips, while their hearts are far from me, and their fear of me is a commandment taught by men.” ‘Chutzpah’ is a Yiddish word connoting shameless audacity, impudence, temerity. (Note the ‘c’ is silent). A classic example of its […]
