Donald Trump Makes War on the Khan Family

I don’t know if Donald Trump can say anything that would give his supporters pause. But if anything should, it’s his psychopathic lack of empathy for Khizr and Ghazala Khan – parents of a fallen American soldier.

In the emotionally rawest moment of the Democratic National Convention, Khizr, with his wife Ghazala beside him, spoke of the combat death of his son Army Captain Humayun Khan. In reflecting on his life, he celebrated Humayun’s character, faith, and patriotism.

Then Khizr excoriated Donald Trump for his threatened ban on Muslims and his lack of knowledge of the Constitution. He pointed out that had Trump’s policies been in effect his son wouldn’t have been there to save ten American soldiers. He further excoriated Trump for “sacrificing nothing”.

Trump – who only sees the world through the prism of ‘me’ – retaliated by wondering why Humayun’s mother had said nothing. He implied that her muteness was a product of an oppressive religion – somehow making Islam the culprit.

Trump, predictably, wasn’t anywhere near the mark. In a later interview with Lawrence O’Donnell, Ghazala made it clear her silence wasn’t the product of religious subjugation, but of grief – the overwhelming pain of the loss of a child.

Trump wasn’t done. He pooh-poohed the idea he had sacrificed nothing by claiming that building a company and creating jobs was his sacrifice.

Tone deaf. Heartless. An unmitigated shit.

Then, no doubt pressed by a functionary who understood the damage the remarks were doing, Trump issued a statement praising Humayun as a hero – but he couldn’t leave well enough alone. He had to justify himself – rendering his praise shabby and insincere.

“Captain Humayun Khan was a hero to our country and we should honor all who have made the ultimate sacrifice to keep our country safe. The real problem here are the radical Islamic terrorist who killed him, and the efforts of these radicals to enter our country and do us further harm.”

And if that wasn’t enough he had to protect his fragile ego by attacking Khizr.

“While I feel deeply for the loss of his son, Mr. Khan who has never met me, has no right to stand in front of millions of people and claim I have never read the Constitution, (which is false) and say many other inaccurate things. If I become President, I will make America safe again.”

Khizr Khn said it best when he characterized Trump’s remarks “typical of a person without a soul.” And just to show he wasn’t kidding he added in another interview, “He is a black soul, and this is totally unfit for the leadership of this country”.

Trump’s super-power is making Nixon look well-adjusted.

Really? – Capt. Humayun Khan, a Great American & a Muslim; Wayne Allyn Root is not a Great American; An Amateur GOP Porn Star.

There is no greater pain than for a parent to lose a child. But for Khizr Khan, he at least had the consolation that his son Army Capt. Humayun Khan, 27 died in service of his country while protecting his men. He is buried with full military honors in Arlington National Cemetary. Khizr Kahn spoke during the […]

Donald Trump – a Legend in His Own Mind.

July 29, 2016

Political conventions are not forums for truth – any more than movies and dreams are. They are where you go to hear a story. And this time around those stories couldn’t have been in starker contrast. Last week, at the Republican version in Cleveland, America was a tale told by George Orwell in his blackest, most pessimistic mood. Donald […]

What the Republicans Should Do to Win the White House.

July 22, 2016

Republicans are the party that says government doesn’t work, and then they get elected and prove it.” ― P.J. O’Rourke History shows that it is very hard for a party to hold onto the White House for three terms. It has only happened six times – last in 1988. The Democratic candidate, Hillary Clinton, is loaded […]

Truth Requires an Open Mind. That’s Why People Believe Lies.

July 17, 2016

Many of us are addicted to lies – especially if those lies comport with how we think the world should be. Let me explain. Conservatives believe that the Bible proscribes gay marriage, and marriage equality is a social disaster. In an attempt to put a non-bigotted slant to their prejudice they claim that they are […]

Evangelicals Sleep with a Dog – Wake up with Gold-Plated Fleas.

July 15, 2016

Donald Trump has strong support from white evangelicals. On the face of it, this xenophobic, racist serial adulterer and divorcee, would hardly seem the object of affection of a Christian movement. But their adoration of the snake-oil salesman is understandable if you consider that evangelicals are not Christian – they are America’s largest white supremacist group. Take […]

Conservatives Root Out the ‘Real’ Culprits in the Dallas Shootings.

July 9, 2016

If you thought it was the gunman who was responsible for killing five Dallas policemen you haven’t being paying enough attention to conservatives. While they don’t agree on exactly whose fault it is, you can see a theme developing. It was Obama. In Rep. Roger Williams (R-TX) estimation, “The spread of misinformation and constant instigation by […]

The Republicans – and Donald Trump – Blow Their Advantage.

July 7, 2016

“We had a choice between Democrats who couldn’t learn from the past and Republicans who couldn’t stop living in it…” ― P.J. O’Rourke The Republicans are politically tone deaf. FBI Director, James Comey, called Hillary Clinton and her staff “extremely careless” in the handling of official emails. But he added her behavior didn’t meet the […]

Really? 7.3.16 – The GOP is rotten. Evangelicals aren’t Christian. Trump is an Anti-Semite and a Whiner.

July 3, 2016

A Republican had the scales fall from his eyes. Mark Winslow, a member of the Tennessee Republican State Executive Committee, resigned his post. Why? As he described it in his resignation letter: the party’s “soul rotted away some time ago.” He was just getting started. “As it’s currently constituted, the TNGOP is really nothing more than […]
