Today is Thanksgiving, and there are many things that I am thankful for and other things that I am not.

I am thankful for all the dedicated doctors, nurses, and medical technicians. I am not thankful for the medical system and insurance mess.

I am thankful for all the dedicated teachers. I am not thankful for politicians writing curricula.

I am thankful for all those people of faith who provide charity, succor, education and medical care to many. I am not thankful to religious zealots who foist their morality on the rest of us.

I am thankful to all the men and women who risk life and limb to fight our battles. I am not thankful to politicians who through stupidity, cupidity and misplaced patriotism send these men and women unnecessarily into harm’s way.

I am thankful that I live in a country where the Tea Party and Occupy Wall Street are entitled to speak their mind. I am not thankful that corporations are ‘people’ with unlimited free speech.

I am thankful that I live in a country where pundits are free to openly bloviate, opinionate, spin, distort and lie. I am not thankful that powerful people and groups can prevaricate anonymously.

I am thankful that in America anyone can, by the sweat of his labor and mind, can get ahead and make his fortune. I am not thankful that plutocrats can manipulate the system so that the entire burden falls on the poor.

I am thankful to live in a country that has produced 1/3rd of all Nobel Prize winners. I am not thankful that science has been reduced to personal opinion.

I am thankful that I live in a country that led the world in technological innovation in the 20th century. I am not thankful that we no longer produce science and engineering PhDs.

I am thankful that I live in a country that adopts and develops new technologies. I am not thankful that politicians and vested interests fight against change.

I am thankful that I live in a country that has welcomed all comers (eventually). I am not thankful for all the xenophobia.

I am thankful that we have freedom of religion. I am not thankful that we have persecution of  American Muslims.

I am thankful that we have developed food and farming technology to the point where hunger should no longer be a threat to any American. I am not thankful that some Americans still go hungry.

I am thankful that our supermarkets have a cornucopia of choice. I am not thankful that industrial food fights to market salty, sugary and fatty crap to our increasingly overweight schoolchildren.

I am thankful for the Americans that make our country great. I am not thankful for all the groups that pursue their selfish interests.

I am thankful for the family and friends that enrich my life and I am thankful for all the friends and family that enrich yours.

Happy Thanksgiving.
