Trump Tweets a Threat to the Rule of Law

in Trump presidency

Donald Trump has threatened to intervene in the Justice Department. He has heard the cries of congressional conservatives bleating that the DoJ has dragged its feet handing over documents. And he whined that what has been handed over was too edited. And why not? He has to do something to divert attention from his increasingly perilous legal situation.

Here’s the tweet:

A Rigged System – They don’t want to turn over Documents to Congress. What are they afraid of? Why so much redacting? Why such unequal “justice?” At some point I will have no choice but to use the powers granted to the Presidency and get involved!

10:45 AM – 2 May 2018

It’s absurd. Head of Justice is AG Jeff Sessions — a Trump pick. Matters he recused himself from fall to Assistant AG Rod Rosenstein, a Trump administration pick. Reviewing the document requests, redacting them as necessary is John R. Rausch Jr., US Attorney, Northern District Illinois, another Trump Administration pick. All senior Obama picks are gone.

If anyone rigged the system, Trump did. But he’s discovering that federal lawyers have a code of honor and a dedication to their office that would never occur to Trump.

The DoJ has made itself available to talk to the House Judiciary Committee about timing and redactions. And it wouldn’t be a surprise if they are leary of a House Committee given the complete lack of integrity evinced by Trump ass-kisser supreme, Devin Nunes, Chair of the House Intelligence Committee, also known for leaking stuff and making things up.

Speaking of Nunes, if Trump is so against redacting why did he release the Democratic summation of the Intelligence committee’s finding with redactions throughout. What’s he afraid of?

It all points to the broader issue of Trump’s erratic behavior – and the possible involvement of his campaign and allies in the Russian hijack of the 2016 election.

And today yet another lawyer, Ty Cobb, quit Trump’s legal team. Lawyers are mercenary sorts, and there are few reasons they would quit on a client under federal investigation. One would be that their client is a complete shit. But Trump’s long-term lawyers already knew his character — so it can’t be that.

Another reason is that their client won’t do what they ask. But if their client is innocent, there isn’t much jeopardy. The justice system bends over backward to ensure rich white men aren’t wrongfully convicted. And there is little possibility that a Trump-picked DoJ would pursue charges unless the evidence was bulletproof.

So that leaves the last possibility. They knew Trump is guilty and they cannot get him to do what they ask. Say stop tweeting, or just shut up.

There is a whole lot of covering up, misdirection and mudslinging going on. But Mueller keeps up his inexorable progress. Trump is falling apart. And the lawyers are no more than rats leaving a sinking ship.
