Misogyny

Al Franken resigned. And he had to. There may be a debate about the relative seriousness of the various abuse claims. But the sheer number — now eight — made Franken’s position untenable. But the way the Democrats went about it was pathetic. They lost a man who had been good on women’s issues and got nothing in return.

Kirsten Gillibrand started the ball rolling yesterday with a post on her Facebook page demanding that Franken resign. But it wasn’t until the sixth paragraph that she got around to others.

In her words:

While it’s true that his behavior is not the same as the criminal conduct alleged against Roy Moore, or Harvey Weinstein, or President Trump, it is still unquestionably wrong, and should not be tolerated by those of us who are privileged to work in public service.

Why are Democrats letting these perverts off easy?

Why weren’t those other offenders sharing the spotlight? Why didn’t she demand that these other abusers resign? I’m not singling out Gillibrand. Many others were quick to pile-on the ‘Franken must resign train’ without using the pulpit to point out the greater sins of the pussy-grabber and the child molester.

I’m also not suggesting that the Democrats should have excused Franken. Or even say “if you aren’t going to get rid of yours, we aren’t going to get rid of ours”. But where’s the fight?

Trump says that all twenty women who accused him of assault were lying — all twenty — and besides they were too ugly to abuse anyway. Moore says all nine of his accusers are lying. Why aren’t the Democrats attacking the misogyny?

Republicans are saying that women are liars; that they aren’t credible. That no matter how many charge a man with vile deeds it must be the man who is telling the truth. It is unabashed and shameless sexism.

Why aren’t the Democrats hammering home that the abuser-in-chief is openly promoting a kiddie-diddler? They should be running ads asking why the RNC changed its mind and now is throwing money at Moore. And why McConnell once said he believed the women, but has now turned his back on decency and punted to the ‘people of Alabama’.

If the Democrats are serious about winning in 2018, they need to armor up, get vicious and take the fight to the GOP. As H.L. Mencken said:

“Every normal man must be tempted, at times, to spit on his hands, hoist the black flag, and begin slitting throats.”

And fortunately for America, normal women too can spit on their hands and get stuck in.

It’s been a mixed week for the religious. Obviously the Hobby Lobby is great news for those who think arbitrary religious beliefs take precedence over national law. On the other hand, there were events less favorable to those who think that religion has some higher claim to moral or legal authority. More hypocrisy in the […]
