Chris Christie

Bill O’Reilly asked Donald Trump why he respected President Vladimir V. Putin of Russia even though he is “a killer”. Trump replied, “You got a lot of killers. What, you think our country’s so innocent?”. We are in charted territory when the President draws a moral equivalence between the United States and Russia. A country where political opponents and independent journalists end up dead.

Even Republicans were outraged by the remarks. Or at least three of them were. Sens. Mitch McConnell, Marco Rubio, and Ben Sasse. Sasse has the credibility of being ‘never Trump’ through it all. Rubio has a habit of dissing Trump before eventually stroking his neck. And McConnell seems to be just saying the right thing with no bigger agenda in mind.

Add Liz Cheney. Darth Vader’s daughter thinks that Trump’s suggestion of ‘moral equivalence between Putin’s Russia and the United States of America is deeply troubling and wrong”.

Where are the other Republicans? Their patron saint, Ronald Reagan, called Russia an ‘Evil Empire’. But these flaccid actors choose to remain silent as his successor coos sweet nothings in a tyrant’s ear.

There is perhaps no more craven a politician than Chris Christie. Beaten, humiliated and dismissed by Trump, Christie has sprung to his abuser’s defense with the observation, “He respects Vladimir Putin because he believes that the leaders of countries deserve to get respect.” This mealy-mouthed absurdity was offered after a week in which Trump had treated the leaders of Mexico and Australia with contempt.

Also selling his values – at least he got a payoff with the VP position – is Mike Pence. A year ago he tweeted, “Calls to ban Muslims from entering the U.S. are offensive and unconstitutional”. Now this man of flexible and convenient morality is a Trump TV defender.

When Judge James L. Robart ruled that the Muslim ban was unconstitutional Pence didn’t concur. In fact, when Trump called Robart “this so-called judge” in a tweet, Pence rushed to defend Trump – saying,“The President of the United States has every right to criticize the other two branches of government”. Sure he has the right. But he should sound like a President, not a belligerent drunk.

Hand-in-hand with the Muslim Ban is the Border Wall. It won’t be as advertised. Already the part about Mexicans paying for it has fallen by the wayside. Now it seems that the wall itself won’t be as solid as presented. In some places, a physical barrier will be replaced with a ‘virtual wall’. To clarify, in Trump speak ‘virtual’ is a synonym of ‘non-existent’.

Trump cannot let Judge Robart go. Here’s his latest tweet. “Just cannot believe a judge would put our country in such peril. If something happens blame him and court system. People pouring in. Bad!” Sad.

Who Will Run Against Hillary In 2020?

In 2015, the Republicans were ecstatic about their slate of candidates.
