North Korea

Accused of ignoring Puerto Rico, healthcare, North Korea, etc. Trump says the NFL/anthem/kneeling brouhaha has not distracted him from his responsibilities. And anyway, it’s an important part of his job.

“To me the NFL situation is a very important situation. I’ve heard that before about — ‘was I preoccupied?’ — not at all,” said Trump. “I have plenty of time on my hands. All I do is work, and to be honest with you, that’s an important function of working. It is called respect for our country.”

We’ll have to take his word for his industry – although the television watching and tweeting gainsay the image of a man toiling in the vineyard. And, of course, hard work counts for nothing if it’s unproductive. Trump claims that he has passed more legislation, in less time, than any previous President. But historians don’t give points for naming  Post Offices.

When it comes to the big stuff — nada. Healthcare? Nothing. Trade renegotiations? Not yet. Climate change? Bluster. He boasts of all the American stuff foreigners are buying, but foreigners are always buying from us.

His long suit is promising things. But he has never put his back into getting anything done. It was easy to leave the TPP — but he offered nothing else. Everybody knows the border wall will never be built — and Mexico isn’t paying for it anyway. NAFTA? Don’t ask. We are definitely leaving the Paris Accord, just not yet – and maybe not at all, if it’s renegotiated — although there’s no word on what we want.

On healthcare his plan was going to be bigger, cheaper, shinier. But he gave it no time. When it came to the detail of it, he punted to Congress.

But even with his call to arms, he made no serious effort to get the Senate on board, instead just fired off some indolent tweets.

Trump is a lazy man who likes to talk. He’s a bully, a braggart, and a blusterer. He doesn’t read, not even his own books – which he doesn’t write. He can’t stay on subject. He can’t speak in sentences. And he is easily distracted. He doesn’t even use email. Twitter suits him — 140 characters, no need to look up an address, or put something in a subject line.

But in his mind, he’s the hardest working President since Teddy Roosevelt.
